Can you truly be a ‘Self Taught’ Photographer?

In a conversation with Pye Jirsa on my podcast (Wisdom in the Tangents) we were going down all sort of tangents, of course. During one of those tangents Pye posed the question, “Can you truly be a self taught photographer?”

Once upon a time in my early photography career days, I would have answered yes, and in fact I proudly am a self taught photographer. However with years of experience and learning many skills, I knew the answer was no.

Episode 239 of the Wisdom in Tangents Photography Podcast covers so many topics, and Pye and I dive into that question of being self taught.

Sure you can pick up a camera and take photos, then learn change some settings and see what changed, and maybe that could be considered ‘self taught.’

Or did you see someone else taking a photo, how they composed the frame and what button they pressed. That’s technically learning from them.

And all the reels and tiktok videos you’ve seen with tips and trick on how to take better photos, that’s adding to your tool belt of photography knowledge too.

Even if we don’t pay for a mentor, or attend a workshop. Even if we don’t listen to photography podcast (which you so totally should btw), we’re still learning from others.

Community creates amazing photographers.
